From the <strong>seed bank of the<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mbg.csic.es\/es\/la-mision-biologica-de-galicia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <strong>Misi\u00f3n Biol\u00f3xica de Galicia (MBG)<\/strong><\/a>, the Operative Group <strong>PROTEINLEG has evaluated a total of 175 traditional and wild varieties of legumes in different growing environments<\/strong>, including pea, bean, chickpea, broad bean and lupin bean.<\/p><p>The trials were conducted to <strong>evaluate the agronomic adaption and the yield<\/strong> of these variaties in <strong>three different locations<\/strong> (Ourense, OU; Pontevedra, PO; Almer\u00eda, AL). As a result of these trials, the <strong>best adapted varieties<\/strong> to a specific environment were selected for each legume. These 10 varieties (2 for each legume studied) came, in all cases, from the east of the Iberian Peninsula.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div This<strong> total amount of proteins translates into a concentration of between 22 and 27,8 g\/100 g, depending of the variety<\/strong>.<\/p><p>However, both pigs and chickens require <strong>nine amino acids whose only supply is through the diet, since they are unable to synthesize by themselves (essential amino acids)<\/strong>. We are, therefore, dealing with amino acids whose presence and quantity are vital in the formulation of feed. The analyses have shown that the highest averages of these amino acids are found in peas and, specifically, <strong>the variety with the highest nutritional quality is PSM 1112-50, a traditional Portuguese variety<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2f24d9b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2f24d9b\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e7e363f\" data-id=\"e7e363f\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a71e9ed elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a71e9ed\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>All in all, these trials seem to indicate that <strong>peas can be a sustainable alternative for the partial replacement of soybean in the production of compound feeds without causing nutritional deficiencies<\/strong>, especially protein deficiencies. Formulation development<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-584c1a3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"584c1a3\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-549c24b\" data-id=\"549c24b\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9896052 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9896052\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In the case of the\u00a0<strong>feed for slow-growing pigs of the Galician breed<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapa.gob.es\/es\/ganaderia\/temas\/zootecnia\/razas-ganaderas\/razas\/catalogo-razas\/porcino\/celta\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Porco Celta<\/strong><\/a>, it included a <strong>higher content of peas (20%) than of soybean meal (11,69%)<\/strong>, and the amount of digestible crude protein was 13,4%.<\/p><p>On the other hand, a <strong>feed formulation for slow-growing chickens of the Galician breed<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapa.gob.es\/es\/ganaderia\/temas\/zootecnia\/razas-ganaderas\/razas\/catalogo-razas\/aviar\/galina-mos\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gali\u00f1a de Mos<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0was also formulated. On this occasion, taking into account the nutritional demands of poultry, the <strong>pea content included in the formulation was 6%, compared to 23,5% of soybean meal<\/strong>. The amount of digestible crude protein is 15%.<\/p><p>Another very important aspect to take into account in the production of this type of compound feed is the price. Apart from variations, the ton of peas costs around 100\u20ac, compared to 360\u20ac for soybean meal. Therefore, <strong>the inclusion of pea in the formulation not only has a positive effect at the environmental and nutritional level, but also at the economic level<\/strong>. The price per ton of pig feed is 234\u20ac, and for poultry feed is 290\u20ac (due to its higher soybean content).<\/p><p>In conclusion, <strong>feed with analytical characteristics similar to those of commercial feed and with more affordable prices has been developed<\/strong>.
